If you have a tattoo you no longer love, a cover-up is often the quickest and most affordable way to turn it into something you are proud of. One of the first questions we hear at our Leyton studio is simple: how much will it cost? The honest answer is that every cover-up is different, but the factors that decide the price are easy to understand.

Where our cover-up prices start

At Tattoo Heroes, cover-up tattoos start from £250. Smaller cover-ups, like a faded name or a small symbol, usually sit near that starting point. Larger projects, such as covering an old tribal band or a dark piece on the forearm or upper arm, take more time and are priced accordingly. Big custom pieces start from £400.

Because every old tattoo is different, we always give you a personal quote after looking at photos of your existing tattoo and talking through your idea.

What affects the price of a cover-up

The size and darkness of the old tattoo

The new design has to be bigger and usually darker than the tattoo underneath. A small, light tattoo is easy to hide. A large, heavily saturated one needs a bigger design with more dark areas, which means more hours in the chair.

The style you want

Black and grey realism, dark florals and bold traditional designs are naturally good at hiding old ink. Very delicate fine line work is harder to use as a cover-up, so your artist may suggest adjusting the style or the size to get a result that lasts.

Placement

Forearms, upper arms and calves are among the easiest areas to work on. Ribs, hands and other areas where the skin is thinner or more sensitive can take longer.

The number of sessions

Many cover-ups are finished in one sitting. Larger projects are split into sessions so the skin can heal between them, and the total price reflects the total time.

Is a cover-up cheaper than laser removal?

For most people, yes. Full laser removal can take many sessions spread over months or years. A cover-up gives you a new tattoo you actually want, usually in far less time. In some cases a few sessions of laser fading beforehand can open up more design options, and your artist will tell you honestly if that would help.
