"Can you cover this?" is one of the most common questions we get at Tattoo Heroes, usually with a photo of an old name, a faded tribal band or a tattoo that simply no longer fits. The good news is that most tattoos can be covered or reworked. The real question is how, and what the finished piece will look like.

What makes a tattoo easy to cover

Light, small and faded tattoos are the easiest to cover. Thin line work, old names and small symbols can usually be hidden inside a new design without much trouble. Tattoos that have faded over the years are often easier to work with than fresh, dark ones.

What makes a cover-up harder

Very dark or solid black areas

Solid black cannot be lightened with more ink. Dark areas have to be absorbed into an even darker part of the new design, which limits the shapes and colours your artist can use there.

Large tattoos in tight spaces

A cover-up almost always needs to be larger than the original. If the old tattoo already fills the space, for example on a wrist or the side of a hand, there may be little room to grow.

Heavily scarred or overworked skin

Skin that has been tattooed many times or has raised scarring can be harder to work on. Your artist will look at the texture of the skin before suggesting a plan.

Cover-up, rework or blast-over?

Not every project needs a full cover-up. A rework keeps parts of your existing tattoo and improves them with better line work, shading and detail. A blast-over places a bold new design over the old one without fully hiding it. At your consultation, your artist will explain which approach gives you the best result.

When laser fading helps

If an old tattoo is very dark or very large, a few sessions of laser fading beforehand can make the cover-up lighter and give you more freedom with the design. It is not always necessary, and your artist will tell you honestly if it would make a difference.

What our artists look at

Before saying yes, we look at the size, darkness and placement of your tattoo, the condition of the skin and the style you want. Then we design something that hides the old work completely and still looks like a tattoo you chose on purpose.
